Bronze Star prepares candidates for success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and in partners. They learn CPR and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. Includes CPR-A.

Bronze Medallion
Prerequisite: Bronze Star OR 13 yrs
The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Medallion award teaches an understanding of the lifesaving water rescue principles – judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defense and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Includes CPR-A.

National Lifeguard Service (NLS)
Prerequisites: 16yrs, Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid (current)
The NLS program prepares candidates to prevent emergency situations and fulfill their role as professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics. NLS develops the basic lifeguarding skills, principles, and decision-making process to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are certified as National Lifeguards (must be re-certified every 2 years).

Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI)
Prerequisites: 15yrs, water safety skills and strokes to Swim Kids 10 standard
Recommended: Swim Kids 10, Bronze Cross
A prerequisite to becoming a Water Safety Instructor; this course covers the foundation of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. Candidates are evaluated during 8 hours of assistant teaching through individual study assignments.

This course further develops instructional ability by focusing on how to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross Swim program. Candidates apply their teaching skills and knowledge during 12 hours of practical teaching experience. Upon successful completion of the course candidates are certified as Water Safety Instructors (must be re-certified every 2 years).
