Cardel Place is LEED™ Gold Accredited, a first for both the City of Calgary and the province of Alberta. Receiving international recognition for this achievement, Cardel Place is doing its part to help the environment.
What is LEED™?
LEED™ is an international measuring tool that gauges a building’s environmental performance. It is made up of five major categories:
- Sustainable sites
- Water efficiency
- Energy and resources
- Innovation and design
- Indoor environmental quality
Sustainable buildings minimize their impact on the environment from design through to construction, to operations and maintenance.
How we did it
Sustainable Sites
- Built into the natural contours of the land, we made the hillside our home
- Natural insulation reduces heating costs and creates an efficient layout
- Shared access road with related infrastructure, saving over an acre of paved roadway and sidewalks, meaning more green space for the community.
Construction
- Paints, adhesives, sealants, and carpeting chosen for environmental friendliness
- 12% of the building materials contain recycled content
- 18% of materials were either extracted or harvested within 500 miles
- 38% of materials were manufactured within 500 miles
- 76% of total waste was separated, recycled and diverted from landfill
Water Efficiency
We save over 26,500,000 litres of water per year:
- High-efficiency toilets, waterless urinals, controlled flow showerheads, timed faucets
- High efficiency irrigation system draws 100% rainwater from the storm water retention pond, using it to maintain drought resistant trees & shrubs
Energy & Atmosphere
- Photo light sensors, combined with glass, let us maximize the use of daylighting and reduce the need for artificial light
- High efficiency / low life cycle cost HVAC system
- Innovative heating and cooling systems
Innovation & Design
- Janitorial staff uses green sealed cleaning products
- Green education - we celebrate our LEED™ gold rating and educate customers on how they can get involved
